Police arrest 17 blacks in housing complex drug sweep

Springfield police arrested 17 people during a drug sweep Friday.

After four months of undercover transactions, police searched for 30 people the grand jury indicted. Police said many of the suspects allegedly sold crack cocaine.

"When you got the drugs, you got crime," said Springfield Police Lt. William Watkins. "You get rid of drugs, you may not get rid of crime all the way, but at least you try to reduce crime."

One woman was caught with $2,000 worth of cocaine in her purse.

"It tested positive for cocaine, so it's the real thing," said one detective.

"We're not going to sit back and let it happen," Watkins said. "We're going to something about it."

Springfield is about 30 miles northwest of downtown Nashville.
