Three teens, one already wanted, arrested for purse snatching

Columbia police have arrested three teens and charged them with snatching a purse from a woman who was walking on Senate Street Saturday night.

One of the teens, Terrance Albert McKee, was already wanted by Columbia police as one of six suspects charged in a string of robberies in the area.

McKee, 18-year-old Rayshawn Lee and an unnamed 16-year-old girl, are each charged with strong-arm robbery following Saturday's incident.

Another man, 33-year-old Arthur Bluford, III, is the last remaining suspect in the summer robberies. He remains on the loose.

DNA Confirms Another James Brown Child

A woman has proven through DNA testing that she is a child of the late James Brown, said a longtime adviser to the soul singer. The woman is the third person to determine through DNA testing done after Brown's death that the singer is their father, Buddy Dallas told The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle on Monday.

About a dozen DNA tests have been performed. Some people have been ruled out as Brown's children, while other tests are pending, said Dallas, who would not release details about any of the newly found children.

Dallas did not return a message left Tuesday at his office by The Associated Press.

Brown's will, which is being disputed in court, names six children.

One of the children found through DNA testing is LaRhonda Petitt, a 45-year-old retired flight attendant and teacher in Houston. She said the test showed that there is a 99.99 percent probability she is Brown's daughter.

The paper reported a Florida woman confirmed she also is one of Brown's children, but told the paper she did not want to be publicly identified.

The DNA testing happened after Brown died Dec. 25 of heart failure at age 73.

One possible child of Brown's who hasn't had a DNA test is 6-year-old James Brown II, the son of Tomi Rae Hynie. Hynie was one of Brown's backup singers and said she is the singer's fourth wife. But Brown's attorneys continue to dispute that claim, and the boy and his mother are not in the singer's will.

Hynie's attorney, Robert Rosen, said she hasn't changed her mind about DNA testing for her son.

"She believes all the children should be treated equally," Rosen said. "If all the children agree to a DNA test, she will consent to one for James II."

A private guardian for the boy also opposes the test, Rosen said.

Illegal Immigrants Accused Of Forcing Teens Into Prostitution

A by 14-year-old girl from Mexico was smuggled into the United States and forced into prostitutionthree illegal immigrants suspected of running a prostitution ring in North and South Carolina, according to court documents.

A federal detention hearing was held Tuesday for two men suspected of holding or transporting illegal immigrants for prostitution. The alleged ringleader, Guadalupe Reyes-Rivera, was being sought on similar charges, according to a sworn statement from Craig Hannah, a special agent with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Bail was denied for Jesus Perez-Laguna, but the local US attorney's office refused to say where he was being held. A spokeswoman would not discuss any details about the case.

Ciro Bustos-Rosales, 35, was being held Wednesday at the Richland County Detention Center on charges of prostitution, pimping and soliciting, according to the jail's website.

Perez-Laguna arranged for the 14-year-old to be smuggled into the country under the guise of getting restaurant work, according to Hannah's statement. The girl was taken to Charlotte, NC, several locations in South Carolina, and later Columbia, where she was forced "to perform acts of prostitution and turn over the proceeds," according to the statement.

A 19-year-old girl and 31-year-old woman also were involved in the prostitution ring, according to Hannah.

Mexican Nationals Accused Of Importing Prostitutes - 2 Men, 1 Woman Face Human Trafficking Charges

The South Carolina U.S. Attorney's Office announced the indictment Tuesday of three Mexican nationals who they say were importing women from Mexico to South Carolina for prostitution.

According to the indictment, Jesus Perez-Laguna, Guadalupe "Mama Martina" Reyes-Rivera and Ciro Bustos-Rosales brought women into the state for use in a commercial sex operation, at least one as young as 14 years old.

Perez-Laguna, Reyes-Rivera and Bustos-Rosales also are accused of harboring illegal immigrants.

Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Wan J. Kim said, "Too often sex traffickers prey on young women who are brought into the United States illegally, thousands of miles from home, and unaware of the U.S. legal system or their rights to be free from this form of involuntary servitude."

If convicted of sex trafficking and related crimes, Perez-Laguna, Reyes-Rivera and Bustos-Rosales face a sentence of up to life in prison and a combined fine of more than $1 million.

Since 2001, the Justice Department has charged more than 430 with human trafficking and secured convictions for 316 defendants.

Nice, kind, sweet colored man kills his ex-GF, stuffs body under house

A man is facing murder charges in Greenwood County after his former girlfriend's body was found underneath an abandoned home.

Police said they found the body of Susan Edens, 40, on Monday under the house at Pearl and Joel streets.

Investigators said Edens' family reported her missing on Friday.

A neighbor of the house called police Monday afternoon, reporting a foul odor coming from the house.

Police said that Derrick Lashawn Anderson, 31, has been arrested and charged in the case.

Police said Tuesday that a man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and putting her body under an abandoned home had tried to set up an alibi to prevent his arrest. Investigators said Derrick Lashawn Anderson, 31, strangled his ex-girlfriend, Susan Edens, 40, and put her body in a crawl space under the house at Pearl and Joel streets.

Edens family had reported her missing on Friday.

While investigating Edens' disappearance, police talked to a woman who claimed not to know anything about it, saying she was in Greenville with Anderson at the time.

WATERTOWN, MA -The New England director of the Anti-Defamation League, Andrew Tarsy, would have us believe that they are honest and neutral brokers with respect to the Armenian Genocide.

According to Tarsy, Abraham Foxman and the ADL never lobbied against a congressional genocide resolution. Rather, they just told inquiring media minds: “… that this issue was one to be resolved by the two countries — Turkey and Armenia.”

Under scrutiny however, Tarsy’s claim seems to fall apart.

U.S.-based Jewish groups demanded that voting on congressional resolutions urging the U.S. administration to recognize an alleged genocide of Armenians be delayed.

“The letter was jointly signed by B’nai B’rith International, the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee and the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs.”

This testimony is corroborated by Ron Kampeas of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. Kampeas reported as follows on April 23:

“Four groups, B’nai B’rith International, the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee and the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs are set to convey a letter from Turkish Jews who oppose the resolution to U.S. congressional leaders. The ADL and JINSA have added their own statements opposing the bill.”

The White Race: Going Gently Into That Good Night

I usually don’t write about skin color, although I have done so sporadically in the past. However, the amount of hatred and racism against whites is now becoming so aggressive, palpable and indeed publicly accepted in much of the world that perhaps I should write another essay about it. Let me start briefly here.

It is noticeable how aggressive many Leftists have become against whites, parallel to Muslim immigration. I think the Leftist logic goes something like this: We failed to achieve our Socialist society during the Cold War. The “white,” Western culture blocked our goals. Since a Socialist society is good, those blocking it are evil, hence whites are evil and need to be subdued and destroyed, even if this includes our own sons, daughters and grandchildren. Utopia requires a Villain Class to be smashed and sacrificed. In the global, Multicultural Utopia, this appears to be whites in general.

I have heard Mexicans in the USA state that white Americans should “go home” to Europe. Of course, if they do go back to Europe, they will find that portions of Europe are increasingly unlivable for whites. We’re not supposed to have a “home.”

I’m sure the British are told that they are swamped by immigration because they used to be a colonial power. But mass immigration to countries such as Norway, Sweden or Switzerland proves that this is not related to past colonial history, since we don’t have any. It is related to one, and only one thing: We are born white. That makes us evil, hence destroying us and our heritage is a good thing. Dozens of nations across an entire continent are being deliberately destroyed and the natives stripped off their lands and culture. This represents perhaps the greatest crime of our age yet it is hardly talked about, and if it is, it is celebrated. 2008 is supposed to be a pan-European year for celebrating diversity, while the natives from Britain via Denmark to Germany, the Netherlands, France and Spain can hardly walk the streets in many of their major cities without being harassed.

The Danish writer Carsten Ringsmose was a speaker at a conference at the University of Odense on the immigration-related topic of “Recognition and integration.” He outlined the projected population growth for the Islamic world, and stated that if recent prognoses are correct, the Islamic world will witness a population growth more than the equivalent of all EU member countries combined within just a few decades. One of the other speakers suggested that this population boom could be solved through migration to the West, which would mean that Denmark, with a present population of 5.4 million inhabitants, would have to accept perhaps 9.5 million predominantly Muslim immigrants within the coming two generations. The man who suggested this, accompanied by segments of the audience, laughed when Mr. Ringsmose suggested that this simply wasn’t doable.

Following the release of a UN population report discussed by Mr. Ringsmose, Marie Simonsen, political editor of the Norwegian left-wing newspaper Dagbladet, wrote that it should be considered a universal human right for people everywhere to migrate wherever they want to. This will quickly swamp a tiny Scandinavian nation. She thus endorsed the persecution and eventual eradication of her own people, no doubt congratulating herself for her own tolerance.

Scores of organizations, ranging from mainstream to fringe groups, are marshalling forces in what former House Speaker Newt Gingrich calls "a war here at home" against illegal immigration, which he says is as important as America’s conflicts being fought overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.

While most of the groups register legitimate, widespread concerns about the impact of illegal immigration on jobs, social services and national security, the intense rhetoric is generating fears of an emerging dark side, evident in growing discrimination against Hispanics and a surge of xenophobia unseen since the last big wave of immigration in the early 20th century.

"I don’t think there’s been a time like this in our lifetime," said Doris Meissner, a senior fellow with the Migration Policy Institute and former commissioner of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. "Even though immigration is always unsettling and somewhat controversial, we haven’t had this kind of intensity and widespread, deep-seated anger for almost 100 years."

The History Channel 9/11 special that aired last night was by far the worst hit piece we have ever witnessed, a completely savage, dishonest and deceptive abomination, replete with dirty tricks, malicious lies and a level of journalistic fraud that goes way beyond simple bias.

Bradley Davis, the producer of the show, is a paid liar and a hit piece specialist who deceives people by gaining their confidence and then attacking them behind their back.

He is famous for the smear job documentary on Michael Jackson and makes a career out of conning people and then stabbing them in the back. His tongue is so smooth, that even the Loose Change crew were prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt on his impartiality before last night's hit piece was aired, with Davis having tricked them into believing he was a friend.

Before filming began, Alex Jones asked Davis point blank if the documentary was going to be a hit piece, which Davis denied. After we brought attention to the History Channel's blurb on their website, which clearly characterized the show as a hit piece, Davis panicked and promised to alter the promo, calling it a "misrepresentation," as well as re-edit the entire program to make it more balanced. The promo temporarily disappeared from the website and the broadcast of the show was put back by a week.

Web threatens traditional news organizations

The Internet is a threat to traditional news organizations, which no longer have the advantage of being the first to report breaking news online, according to a Harvard University study released yesterday.

Researchers at the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics & Public Policy found that nontraditional media Web sites, including aggregators, bloggers, search engines and service providers, were growing faster than Web sites connected to traditional news media outlets, such as newspapers. The researchers studied the traffic of 160 news sites for one year, from April 2006 to April 2007.

The Web sites of Google Inc., Yahoo Inc. and AOL LLC, as well as MSN and smaller sites such as topix.net, dig.com and reddit.com experienced large increases in traffic.

"Between April 2006 and April 2007, Digg's unique monthly visitors grew from under 2 million to more than 15 million," the study said, adding that Reddit and Topix grew from less than 50,000 visitors a month to more than 700,000.

However, news organizations can still prosper on the Web if they can adapt, the study said.

"Local news organizations are 'brand names' within their communities, which can be used to their advantage," according to the study. "Their offline reach can also be used to drive traffic to their sites. Most important, they have a product -- the news -- that people want. Ironically, some news organizations do not feature the day's news prominently on their Web sites, forgoing their natural advantage."

While traffic to the Web sites of nationally known newspapers grew by 10%, traffic to the Web sites of lesser-known newspapers decreased by varying percentages, according to the study.

Traffic to the Web sites of national TV networks, such as CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and Fox grew 30%, the study found. Visitors to the Web sites of local commercial TV and radio stations also increased, but at a slower pace.

"Because the Web reduces the influence of geography on people's choice of a news source, it inherently favors 'brand names' -- those relatively few news organizations that readily come to mind to Americans everywhere when they go to the Internet for news," the study said.

Rodriguez loses his license for a year in a DWI killing of White female and her unborn child.

Rodriguez Pleads Guilty to DWI Charge

A Leland man suspected of being under the influence of alcohol when he hit and killed a woman five years ago has been convicted of driving while impaired.

Efrain Rodriguez pleaded guilty to a DWI charge in a New Hanover County courtroom on Monday.

Rodriguez has a history of driving drunk.

He has been arrested twice before on DWI charges. In 2003, he hit and killed a pregnant woman then drove away.

Police suspect he was drunk but couldn't prove it since they didn't find him until the next day.

Rodriguez served less than a year for the hit and run.

The victim's father says he wants Rodriguez behind bars for life.

Rodriguez will lose his license for a year.

As part of his guilty plea, he will have to serve community service by cleaning up the memorial of the woman he killed.

Victim, her murderer was sentenced to a year of license revocation and to clean-up her memorial, she, was sentenced to death.

The passive father, he tried to the best of his ability to seek justice for his daughter's killer, but the cards were stacked against him. He was insulted, abused and intimidated at the court house and in the end, his worst fears were realized, justice escaped him, his daughter and his unborn grandchild.

The invader, comes in to a country in which he doesn't belong. Kills a citizen of that country and walks away as if nothing happened. Some claim there is a conspiracy against the White inhabitants of America, to those I say, this case strengthens your argument even further. They can kill a member of our race, even an innocent young woman with child and it's like "nothing happened." Yet, we kill a member of theirs and it's like the world stopped. Well, stops with the exception of the printing presses and the talking heads on TV, they never forget. Man Arrested for Allegedly Kidnapping Girls

A Gastonia man arrested for kidnapping and assaulting two little girls is is also in the country illegally.

Ramone Zamora-Solano's face looked bruised and swollen when he appeared in a Gaston County courtroom Monday afternoon.

Police say the 41-year-old grabbed a two girls and tried to sexually assault one of them inside his apartment.

The girls' fathers caught Solano and beat him up.

"He was making several advances toward one of the little girls," said Detective R. E. Lovingood with the Gaston County Police Department.

Police said Solano pulled up the skirt of one girl, exposing her underwear.

Solano is being held on $350,000 bond at the Gaston County Jail.

He is 19 and has his whole life ahead of him, but not at the rate he's going.

In the case of Cedric Gaston, it works two ways.

Maybe the system failed him, but he also failed the system.
(Or, WTF is he doing in the "system" to begin with?)

He has had more charges and more second chances in his life than birthdays. He has 22 pending right now.

A couple of those are from a car break-in over the weekend. He was caught in the act and out on bond the same day.

In fact, his jail time is just a flash in the pan. In all of his arrests for breaking into cars, armed robbery, stealing, and lying to police, the most time he has done is six months.

Usually it is a day, maybe two weeks here or there.

"I'm always curious when I see the mugshot of a 19 year old on television. That's not what the plan for his life should have been," said Children's Advocate Brett Loftis.

Loftis tries to turn young offenders around. They have a saying in his job.

"Sad kids steal and angry kids rape. If you don't deal with the disfunctions early on, they'll manifest in some way."

We have no idea about Gaston's life.

Loftis said, "I know he's been arrested a lot, obviously there's a problem..."

His family wouldn't talk and whatever his issues are, they are not an excuse.

In the same way, Loftis says locking Gaston up isn't a solution. "Which there's a purpose in, but you really don't want him to come back, you have to do something different while he's there."

But he doesn't believe in giving a million second chances either. At some point, there's a real public safety issue. (Like after an armed robbery or two - or three?)

That is what ticks off police officers and a lot of people in this community.

Ultimately, Gaston makes his own choices and today he failed to show up in court.

Faced with 70,000 students or more who are years behind in obtaining the credits needed to graduate from high school, New York City is at the forefront of a movement to recognize that for a significant number, high school might stretch into five, six, even seven years.

In an effort that has expanded across Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s second term, the city has spent nearly $37 million to identify and cater to students who are at the biggest risk of dropping out and has already contracted for $31 million more in programs.

The staggering numbers of those who are far behind cover almost a quarter of the city’s public high school population — students like Sunil Ragoonath, who at 18 had passed barely enough courses at John Adams High School in Queens to be considered a sophomore. He routinely skipped school. “All I had to do was walk out the door,” Mr. Ragoonath said recently.

To get younger students who have failed many classes back on track, Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein has created more than two dozen “transfer schools,” and plans to open as many as 30 more over the next five years. The city also offers them intensive remedial courses.

For students past the traditional graduation age, the city has established special centers to provide counseling, night classes and an environment designed to avoid the stigma of being college age but in class with 14-year-olds. Some students also earn credits through summer school and community college classes.

Two Hawkeyes Arrested, Suspended

Two University of Iowa football players have been suspended indefinitely following their arrest Sunday.

Sophomore wide receivers Dominique Douglas and Anthony Bowman were taken into custody by University of Iowa Police. They were charged with unauthorized use of a credit card and were later released on their own recognizance.

Iowa Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz had the following statement:

"I am aware of the accusations that have been made against two members of the football program. Both student-athletes have been suspended indefinately from participation in all team activities."

"The accusations are serious and, if proven to be true, are extremely disappointing for everyone associated with the University of Iowa and our football program. As always, we will work with the appropriate individuals and entities on and off campus as this matter works its way through the legal system."

As is often the case in matters of this nature, I am aware of inconsistencies in what may or may not have taken place. We need to let the legal process run its course."

Coach Ferentz will not comment further, at this time, on the matter.

Truble in tha moe-rines - two marines kill two marines - just convicted

Two men have pleaded guilty for their part in a double murder in Jacksonville that happened just over a year ago.

This morning Jondre Lowemincey pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree murder in Onslow County Superior Court and received two consecutive life sentences. Prosecutors say he made the plea to avoid the possibility of the death penalty.

Lowemincey admitted to killing Lance Corporal Jordan Barrow and Lance Corporal Amanda Carrithers after breaking into their house on East Drive in Jacksonville.

Prosecutors say just hours before the murders Carrithers had told Lowemincey she was pregnant and he was not the father. They say Lowemincey was the trigger man in the two murders.

Late this afternoon Tharon Johnson, also charged in the case, took a guilty plea on two counts of second degree murder. He was given a sentence of 250-318 months in prison.

Suffolk police have one suspect in custory and are searchign for a second in an attempted robbery and shooting.

It happened on August 11th on the 800 block of E. Washington Street.

Police say Chester Donaldson, 38, asked met three girls early in the day and asked them to striptease dance for him in a van inside his auto repair garage.

Around 10:00 p.m., after the dance was over, police say a confusion over payment caused a fight.

One girl, 15, allegedly called her boyfriend, asking him to come to the business. Galvin R. Daughtrey, II, 20, and Daniel Lamont Bess, 22, responded to the call.


When they arrived, they allegedly demanded money from Donaldson and shot him in the leg.

Daughtrey turned himself in Wednesday afternoon. He faces charges of aggravated malicious wounding, attempted robbery, conspiracy, shooting within an occupied dwelling and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Police are still looking for Bess, who is described as a black man, around 5'8" tall, weighing about 150 pounds. His last known address is the 600 block of Sunset Avenue in Suffolk.

Police say petitions have also been secured against the fifteen-year-old girl.

The victim was treated at Sentara Norfolk Hospital and later released.

Police say transgendered man was providing injections for other transgendered people.

Police have arrested a transgendered man and accused him of providing silicone injections to other transgendered people at his home.

Francis Renee White, 36, faces two charges of practicing medicine without a license. Police spokeswoman Lt. Debbie George said White was providing the injections with the consent of the people who were receiving them.

White has no formal medical background or training. He is charged in two separate incidents that took place at his house on South Main Street in June 2006 and January 2007. George said it is possible that there are more cases of people he treated.

Virginia Murder Suspect Caught In Greenville

Virginia police say a man wanted in a double shooting in Newport News was caught over the weekend in Greenville.

Steven Gray was arrested at Greenville's Hampton Inn Saturday morning. He was wanted in Newport News for a double shooting and murder that happened there last weekend.

The 25 year old Gray is facing one count each of murder and aggravated assault, two counts of attempt robbery, and four counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Man Charged In 2006 Kidnapping, Attempted Rape

An 18 year old Greenville man has been charged with the attack of a Stokes woman last fall.

Cornelius Roberson is charged with 2nd degree kidnapping and attempted 2nd degree rape.

Deputies say back on October 4th a 58 year old woman was working in her yard when Roberson approached her saying a dog had run into her barn.

As the two were looking for the dog, authorities say the suspect grabbed her from behind and attempted to drag her to the floor. The woman began calling her dog and the man ran away.

Deputies say the arrest came after evidence pointed to the suspect that collected at the scene was sent to the SBI lab in Raleigh.

Roberson's bond was set at $200,000.

Burglary Ring Broken Up

Greenville police say they have broken up a burglary ring that has plagued the city since December 2005.

Police say the seven men and others are responsible for numerous burglaries and motor vehicle thefts.

Three men have already been arrested. They are 44 year old Linwood Muchison, 25 year old Timothy Harris and 24 year old Willie Lloyd.

Police are still looking for four other suspects:

Richard Lee, 19, of Greenville
Cody Corey, 21, of Greenville
Kinmonte Brown, 20, of Greenville.

Police say so far this year the ring is responsible for at least 22 thefts or burglaries. Police expect other suspects to be named as their investigation progresses.

Girl Abandoned At Va. Chuck E. Cheese

Police in Prince William County talked to family members Monday after a girl allegedly was abandoned on Sunday.

Authorities said that at about 8:40 p.m., police were called to a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant located at 14085 Shoppers Best Way in Woodbridge for the report of an abandoned child.

hey said the abandoned girl is black, about 4 years old, 3 feet 6 inches tall and 40 pounds. Police said she has braided hair with pink beads and was wearing a pink shirt and blue denim shorts.

Police said that the girl told them her name is Taji.

The staff at Chuck E. Cheese reported to police that Taji was observed entering the restaurant at between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. with a black woman, who is about 25 years old, with mohawk-styled hair colored in red. They said the woman was wearing a red, fitted shirt.

Anyone with information about the case should call the Prince William County Police Department at 703-792-6500.

Taji is still in the custody of Child Protective Services.

A birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese did not end happily for Taizhae Carroll. She was left behind at the restaurant in Woodbridge and the look on her face in photos says it all.

Prince William County Police released photographs of the little girl in an effort to find her family. Officer Erika Hernandez says authorities got a call from the restaurant's staff around 8:40 Sunday night. The child was in the Chuck E. Cheese alone and she could only tell them her name is Taizhae.

"Everybody wants her back. Everybody called me crying, everybody," said the child's aunt, Ieesha Carroll. "It was just a big mistake."

Carroll says she found out Taizhae was not with relatives when her cousin called around 7 Monday morning. She told Carroll about news reports on a child abandoned at Chuck E. Cheese that sounded like Taizhae.

"I called my father and asked where is Taizhae 'cause she stays at my parent's house," said Carroll. "And then he said we thought she went with another member of our family. We have a big family, and there was a party and there was a lot of kids there."

Anti-immigration group hit with bottles, balloons

What were supposed to be two separate protests by two opposing groups turned violent when the one group grew confrontational and threw balloons and beer bottles at its opposition on Saturday.

Some 200 people gathered to protest against what they claim is President Bush's support of a North American union which, the protesters claim, would eliminate U.S. sovereignty.

"Not every illegal immigrant is a criminal - we understand that, but we are allowing people into this nation who are doing us harm," said Jonnie Crivello, a protester.

The protesters gathered at the Seattle Center and marched down Third Avenue to the Federal Building. While rallied there, they were bombed with beer cans and balloons by counter-protesters who were holding their own rally, prompting police to intervene.

About 50 counter-protesters were present, claiming shutting down the border is a racist act.

"We say no human being is illegal and everybody - just by working here - automatically has the right to live here," said Jorge Torres, a counter-protester.

Police said many of their officers were hurt during the protests. No arrests were made.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. media reporting of the war in Iraq fell sharply in the second quarter of 2007, largely due to a drop in coverage of the Washington-based policy debate, a study released Monday said.

Taken together, the war's three major story lines -- the U.S. policy debate, events in Iraq and their impact on the U.S. homefront -- slipped roughly a third, to 15 percent of an index of total news coverage, down from 22 percent in the first three months of the year.

The study by the Project for Excellence in Journalism examined 18,010 stories that appeared between April 1 and June 29. Its "News Coverage Index" encompasses 48 outlets, including newspapers, radio, online, cable and network television.

The project is a research group studying and evaluating press performance. It describes itself as nonpartisan, nonideological and nonpolitical. The index is designed as an audit of a broad cross-section of U.S. news media.

The 2008 presidential campaign -- with its crowded field for the Democratic and Republican party nominations -- emerged as the top story in U.S. media in the second quarter, overtaking the Iraq policy debate, the biggest thread of the three Iraq-related storylines, the survey found.

Attention to the war dropped in all five media sectors surveyed. Network evening news, the sector that gave the war the greatest share of attention in the first quarter, scaled back more than 40 percent, from 33 percent in the first quarter to 19 percent in the second, the study showed.

On cable television, another leader in first-quarter coverage, the slide was nearly as great, from 23 percent of news reported to 14 percent -- a drop of 39 percent, the project said.

The bulk of the fall took place after May 24, when Congress approved war funding without including troop withdrawal timetables. This was widely viewed by the media as a victory for President George W. Bush in a political battle with Congress sparked by his January 10 troop "surge" announcement.

The British Army has been defeated in Iraq and left with no option but to retreat from the country, claims radical Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Violent resistance and a rising death toll among UK troops has forced a withdrawal, he said in an interview with The Independent.

"The British have given-up and they know they will be leaving Iraq soon," Mr Sadr said. "They are retreating because of the resistance they have faced. Without that, they would have stayed for much longer, there is no doubt."

The young nationalist cleric heads Iraq's largest Arab grassroots political movement, and its powerful military wing, the Mehdi army. It has clashed frequently with British forces in southern Iraq, most recently in the battle for power over the oil-rich port city of Basra. Scores of British soldiers have been killed and wounded by Sadrist militants.

"The British have realised this is not a war they should be fighting or one they can win," Mr Sadr said. "The Mehdi army has played an important role in that." He also warned that Britain's involvement in the invasion of Iraq had made the UK a less safe place to live. "The British put their soldiers in a dangerous position by sending them here but they also put the people in their own country in danger," he said. "They have made enemies among all Muslims and they now face attacks at home because of their war. That was their mistake." His comments came during two separate meetings with The Independent at the Sadr movement's headquarters in Kufa, a holy Shia city, 100 miles south of Baghdad, and site of the Grand Mosque where Mr Sadr often preaches fiery Friday sermons. The streets were eerily devoid of cars, which are, in effect, banned in an effort to prevent bombings. Senior Shia leaders are high on the list of targets for Sunni extremists.

Only two guards with AK-47 assault rifles appeared to be protecting Mr Sadr in his office, a clear sign that Kufa and the surrounding area is firmly under the control of Sadr loyalists. It is not patrolled by US troops and access is policed by Iraqi security at heavily armed roadblocks.

Mr Sadr's remarks echo those of senior British military commanders who have come to view the mission of UK forces in Iraq as finished. They have reportedly told the Prime Minister Gordon Brown there is nothing more to be achieved in southern Iraq and that troops should be redeployed to Afghanistan.
